history
The history of public broadcasting in South Dakota goes back to the medium wave transmitter KUSD (now mute). The station was one of the first "educational stations" in the USA and started its regular program on May 27, 1922. The then student and later Nobel Prize winner in physics, Ernest O. Lawrence and USD Dean Lewis , played a key role in the construction of the station Akeley.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the South Dakota Public Radio Network came into being, with nine stations and ten filling stations throughout South Dakota. When setting up the network, the possibility of installing an additional VHF transmitter and a corresponding transmitting antenna was already included in the planning. The network's regular broadcaster is in Vermillion KUSD (FM).
