South Mills (Dundee)

The South Mills were a textile manufacturing company in the Scottish city ​​of Dundee in the council area of the same name . In 1987 the textile mill was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

During the industrial revolution in the 19th century, Dundee developed into one of the most important locations for the textile industry in the United Kingdom . At the wedding in the late 19th century, around 60 textile mills were in operation there, employing more than 50,000 people. Around two thirds of the workers were women.

The South Mills were built in 1825. The operator was Brown & Miller . Later, the textile mill went to Co. Cunningham and over. The Old Mill , built in 1825, is the second oldest surviving textile mill in Dundee. The New Mill was built between 1851 and 1857 and expanded in 1864 and again in 1874. The South Mills were used to process flax fiber . In 1999 apartments were set up in the now abandoned buildings.

The buildings stand between Session Street and Brown Street on the west edge of Dundee city center. With the Tay Works and the Verdant Works, there are two further textile mills in the immediate vicinity. The Old Mill extends along Session Street. Its wall is made of roughly hewn blocks quarried stone . The west-facing main facade of the two-story building is 14 axes wide. The windows on the upper floor are significantly larger than those on the ground floor. Various entrance doors were added in the 1860s or later.

The New Mill extends along Brown Street. The three-story building is the third longest multi-story mill in Dundee. Three projections protrude faintly from the quarry stone facade, which is 33 axes wide . They close with triangular gables that are decorated with acroteria . The windows are designed with segmental arches along the risalits, each with a width of three axes . In the southern risalits, the former machine house, a wide doorway was built around 1930.
