Southern Canal (Arizona)
The Southern Canal is a canal in Maricopa County , State of Arizona and is located in the eastern part of the metropolitan area around the city of Phoenix (Arizona) .
The canal is created in Scottsdale by the Granite Reef weir on the Salt River . Its original purpose was to irrigate agricultural crops. The Southern Canal flows through Mesa and just before it joins the Consolidated Canal it flows through the Park of the Canals .
The federal government built the canal between 1906 and 1908. Almost every year floods occurred as a result of heavy rainfall and the low gradient in the neighboring districts.
