The Southern Outlet ( The Outlet ) is an urban freeway in the south of the Australian state of Tasmania . The highway connects downtown Hobart with Kingston and the parts of Tasmania further south. The four-lane highway is one of the busiest arterial roads in Hobart, counting over 31,000 vehicles every day.
course
The Southern Outlet begins at the junction of Davey Street and Macquarie Street in Hobart with a route limited to 80 km / h. The southern suburb of South Hobart is bypassed in the east. Then the road heads for the hilly area of Mount Nelson . With the exception of the connection to Davey Street / Macquarie Street, the Southern Outlet only has height-free entrances and exits. Most of the route runs through bushland. Due to the hilly nature of the country, the two lanes between the overpass at Tolmans Hill and the one at Firthside are separated. The maximum permissible speed in this area is 100 km / h. The road ends in Kingston, where it joins the Huon Highway (A6) and the Channel Highway (B68).
history
The 1965 Hobart Transportation Study identified the need for an efficient road link from Hobart to Kingston. The Southern Outlet was built in 1968 as a four-lane motorway - like road and led from Kingston further west to the connection to the old Huon Highway at '' Grove ''. In 1985 the Southern Outlet was expanded as a motorway. The route from Kingston to Grove was added to the new Huon Highway.
Entrances and exits
The list of connections also includes connection to the future Kingston bypass.
