Course of the road
|
The Huon Highway is a trunk road in the south of the Australian state of Tasmania . It connects Hobart and Kingston with the parts of the island further south.
course
Today the Huon Highway connects to the Southern Outlet in Kingston , which, like the Huon Highway itself, is numbered A6. The road runs west through the Sandfly, Lower Longley, and Grove settlements on the trail of the original Southern Outlet. The Huon Road (B64) joins Lower Longley and is the shortest connection to Hobart along Mount Wellington . From there the Huon Highway runs through the Valley of the Mountain River in a south-west direction to Huonville . In Huonville it crosses the Huon River and continues its way southwest along the river's estuary via Franklin, South Franklin, Castle Forbes Bay and Port Huon to Geeveston . From there it follows the Huon River and then the D'Entrecasteaux Canal via Waterloo, Surges Bay and Glendevie to Dover at Port Esperance . The city leaves the Huon Highway to the west, in order to turn south again in Raminea . It finally reaches its end point in Southport via Strathblane .
history
The old Huon Highway, now called Huon Road and numbered B64 , is a winding, two-lane road on the south flank of Mount Wellington. This section of the route was bypassed with the construction of the Southern Outlet in 1968, which originally led to Grove . This created a more efficient connection from Hobart to the Huon Valley. Later the road from Kingston was added to the new Huon Highway. Some sections of the route, all of which are in the Huon Valley, have been expanded.
