The Southern Yacht Club is the second oldest yacht club in the United States . It was founded in 1849 and is located in New Orleans on Lake Pontchartrain .
history
The club was founded on July 21, 1849 in Pass Christian in Harrison County, Mississippi, on the Gulf of Mexico , and the Pass Christian Hotel became the club's headquarters in the following years. In 1857 they moved to New Orleans and held the regattas on Lake Pontchartrain. After the American Civil War , the club was reorganized and a new clubhouse built. In 1899 a larger clubhouse was built under the direction of Commodore Albert Baldwin. Regattas continue annually on the lake with the fleet competing each summer in interclub races on the Gulf Coast. The clubhouse was extensively expanded and renovated in 1899 and 1920. In 1949 it was replaced by a modern concrete and steel structure, which was then expanded in 1960 and 1980. Another expansion was planned for 2005, but Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc and ultimately burned down uncontrollably. A temporary system was created under the direction of Commodore Ewell Potts III and Hjalmar Breit. Finally, the fourth clubhouse was inaugurated on September 12, 2009.
