Soviet Cemetery of Honor, 2018

The Soviet war cemetery is a landmarked Soviet cemetery for the Second World War fallen Soviet soldiers in Burg (bei Magdeburg) in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

It is located north of Kirchhofstrasse behind the Burger swimming pool, northwest of the Burger city center. A German military cemetery is located a little west of the cemetery.

Design and history

The cemetery of honor was laid out in the 1970s for 369 Soviet citizens on what was then the Westfriedhof Burgs , who died as soldiers during the fighting in the region in the spring of 1945 or died as forced laborers or prisoners of war. People who died after 1945 are also buried here. In the cemetery there is a memorial in the form of a wall, on which the names of the deceased in Cyrillic script and dates of life are noted on panels .

In the center is a Soviet tank as a symbol of victory . As part of the preparations for the State Garden Show Burg (near Magdeburg) in 2018 , the facility was renovated together with the German military cemetery for € 300,000 and included in the garden show grounds. During the renovation, the number of people who are commemorated with memorial plaques was also increased. 539 Soviet deceased and 13 unknown Soviet citizens are now commemorated. The re-inauguration took place in the presence of the mayor of Burg Jörg Rehbaum , the Saxony-Anhalt Interior Minister Holger Stahlknecht , the representative of the Russian embassy Alexandr Gribovskii and the regional chairman of the war grave relief organization Dieter Steinecke . An evangelical pastor also interceded . A Russian Orthodox pastor blessed the tomb.

In the local register of monuments , the memorial is recorded as a monument under registration number 094 05528 .

Access

During the state horticultural show until October 2018, free access to the facility is only possible if the city administration has explicitly asked for it. In case of difficulties, the Russian Embassy in Berlin will help.
