The Egyptian Islamic Labor Party ( Arabic حزب العمل الإسلامى المصرى, DMG Ḥizb al-ʿamal al-islāmī al-miṣrī , formerly the Socialist Labor Party in Arabic حزب العمل الاشتراكى, DMG Ḥizb al-ʿamal al-ištirākī ) is an Islamist party in Egypt . It was banned from 2000 to 2011 and is now a member of the Democratic Alliance for Egypt .
Political ideology
The party, which was established on September 9, 1978 by Ibrahim Schukri and others as the successor to the Young Egyptian Party , was originally a socialist party. Since 1986 the party has undergone a major ideological shift, making it the Islamist party. This change was demonstrated at the fifth party conference in 1989, which was held under the title "Reform for an Islamic Perspective".
In September 2006, the party attracted international media attention. According to the so-called Pope quote from Regensburg , which is part of a lecture by Benedict XVI. was about Islam, she accused it of ignorance and insult to the Prophet Mohammed and called for protests.
Election results
The party and few others boycotted the parliamentary elections in Egypt in 1990 because the 1972 Amendment to the Suffrage banned unified party lists and the Socialist Labor Party wanted to join forces with the Muslim Brotherhood to capture larger votes in the elections.
Prohibition
On May 20, 2000, the Egyptian Political Affairs Committee (the lead committee for approving the establishment of political parties in Egypt ) decided to freeze Labor Party's activities and suspend its newspaper al Shaab . The committee referred to Article 17 of the Political Parties Act , which enables a party's activities to be suspended - as a means of ending a decision or action by a party that is contrary to the higher interests of the country.
The committee based its decision on the split within the ranks of the party: one group is led by Hamdi Ahmad , a member of the party executive, and the other by Ahmad Idris . The committee's decision related to the official complaint brought by party members who expressed concern about the party leadership. The two party members also asked for the suspension of Al-Shaab's publication and for the party's bank accounts to be frozen. Labor Party leader Ibrahim Shukri described these demands as illegal.
