The Socialist Party of Senegal ( French Parti Socialiste du Sénégal , abbreviation PS) is a political party in Senegal . Ousmane Tanor Dieng has been the party's first general secretary since 1996 . The best-known and most popular person of the PS so far is the poet, poet and first president of the country, Léopold Sédar Senghor . Senghor, who had co-founded the moderate left Bloc démocratique sénégalais (BPS) in 1948 , also remained the political leader when the BPS merged with various other political movements to form the Union progressiste sénégalaise (UPS) until 1958 .

Since independence in 1960, the UPS was the ruling party of the country for a good four decades, since 1976, after joining the Socialist International under the name Parti Socialiste . In the presidential election in 2000 , the party candidate and long-term president Abdou Diouf was defeated by the leader of the Parti Démocratique Sénégalais , Abdoulaye Wade , in the second round of the election. In the first round, Diouf was still leading with 41.3% of the vote. In the runoff election, Wade prevailed with 58.5%. In the national parliamentary elections on April 29, 2001, the party won 10 of the 120 seats in the National Assembly of Senegal with 17.4% of the vote , thereby losing its leading position here as well. In the presidential election in February 2007, the PS candidate, Tanor Dieng, came third with 13.56% of the vote. Dieng also ran for the 2012 presidential election in Senegal , but was eliminated there with 11.3% of the vote in the first round. Since the party boycotted the parliamentary elections in June 2007, it is currently not represented in the Senegalese parliament.

The Socialist Party of Senegal is a full member of the Socialist International .
