Before monetary union in June 1990, it accounted for 88.6% of total sales. He owned 70.3% of the sales outlets and 86.5% of the sales area of ​​the East German retail trade. From 1945 to 1987 its share increased steadily, then in the last years of the GDR there was a gentle increase in the share of private traders.

Socialist trade was divided into three categories:

  • State-owned trade

Its companies were under the control of the Ministry of Trade and Supply . The structuring was mainly carried out by the trade organization HO . Around 230 companies with around 22,000 local units belonged to it. This included around 7500 restaurants , 16 Centrum department stores and 24 hotels including the Interhotels .

  • Consumer cooperative retail trade

Around 200 consumer cooperatives with 30,000 local units were grouped under the Konsum brand . They operated around 6,000 restaurants, several hundred specialty shops and 15 consumer department stores. Some of the goods sold were produced in the cooperative's own production facilities (e.g. large bakeries and butchers).
