The late gorse spanner ( Chesias legatella ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the spanner family (Geometridae).

The wingspan of the moth ranges from 35 to 38 millimeters. The moths have a pattern in the colors brown, gray-black and white. A wide white line drawing of the forewings parallel to the anterior wing edge, which extends to the apex, is striking . In English, the butterfly species is called streak for "strand" or "line".

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are colored green and have a distinctive white line drawing on the sides.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The late gorse spanner occurs in North Africa, in Western and Central Europe including the British Isles, and in southern Scandinavia . The species prefers to inhabit forest edges and heather areas with gorse vegetation . The population of the late gorse strainer is considered endangered.

Way of life

The nocturnal and crepuscular moths fly in one generation from early September to early November. The moths are sometimes attracted by artificial light sources at night . The caterpillars hatch from their eggs after overwintering and can be seen in May and June. The forage plants of the caterpillars include various species of the genus Genista and the broom ( Cytisus scoparius ).
