Spökelburg

The Spökelburg , also known as Schiffbekerburg or Schleemerburg , is an abandoned early medieval hilltop castle on the so-called "Spökelberg" in Hamburg-Billstedt .

The Spökelburg was probably built at the beginning of the 9th century as a palisade- reinforced rampart of the type of a motte (tower hill castle) over a Schleemer brook valley and served to secure the traffic route to a then important Elbe crossing at the Ertheneburg , near today's Artlenburg .

In the period around 1201 the castle was used and maintained by Danes until it was razed by Hamburg troops on their way back from the battle of Mölln in 1225 . The remains then served the farmers of the surrounding villages as a refuge. Around the time of the Reformation (1517 to 1648) robber barons are said to have holed up in the remaining earth walls .

The Burgstall (castle site) shows only small remains and traces of terrain. In 1865, a house that is still preserved today was built on the Spökelberg. This house and the remains of the Spökelburg are under monument protection (numbers 13835 and 14281 of the list of monuments of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg).
