Space was a four-piece band formed by Didier Marouani in France in 1977 .

Band history

Some of the band's pieces of music made it into the charts , including the most famous Magic Fly , which even became a No. 1 hit in many countries. Since Marouani was not only the founder of the band, but also wrote all the tracks on the first three albums himself (initially under the pseudonym Ecama ), he is often the only one associated with Space, although he left the band in 1979 and later new ones Realized projects under his name or under the name Didier Marouani & Space . The band released a total of four albums, and a best-of sampler was also released. Didier Marouani recorded five more albums without permanent band members, but these are still included in the Space discography.

The 1980 album Deeper Zone was produced without Marouani because, after disagreements with his producer who had canceled a planned concert at the Eiffel Tower in Paris at short notice, he left the group to continue working under his own name. This was necessary because the rights to the name Space remained with the producer and Marouani was no longer allowed to use the band name he had created. Deeper Zone was a flop, however, so that Roland Romanelli , another founding member and after Marouani's departure the new head of the group, gave up the name Space and then continued his musical career under his name. Romanelli achieved a veritable success with the instrumental piece Connecting Flight , which was the title melody of the ZDF hit parade from 1985 to 1986 .

Since the great success did not materialize after the hit Magic Fly , Didier Marouani concentrated after 1979 on the area of the former Soviet Union , where he had many live performances, especially in Russia and Ukraine , and is still much more popular in these countries than in his home country and Western Europe . Marouani has since regained the naming rights for Space and in 2011 produced a new album From Earth To Mars .

style

The musical genre of Space can be assigned to an early form of electro-pop and certainly also to the disco music popular at the time . Due to the futuristic sounds and cover artwork, the group is also associated with the sub-genre Space Disco . Most of the band's albums were recorded with synthesizers , but all also contain at least one vocal piece.
