Spaceway is the name of a series of geostationary television or communications satellites that provide broadband Internet connections and broadcast HDTV for DirecTV users in North America . It is also the name of the Ka-band communication system from Hughes Electronics, which is behind the Internet supply system .
Spaceway-1 was launched by Sea Launch on April 26, 2005 with a Zenit-3SL rocket . It was the first of three identical Spaceway satellites to be built on the basis of the Boeing 702 satellite bus . These three-axis stabilized satellites were actually designed to carry simple broadcast and two-way Internet data on a 500 MHz wide channel. However, at DirecTV's request, Boeing changed the first two satellites to broadcast HDTV channels. Spaceway-1 and Spaceway-2 were each brought a short distance from the satellites DirecTV-10 and DirecTV-11 in order to serve together with these for the transmission of HDTV television.
Spaceway-3 is used by Hughes Network Systems (a provider of broadband Internet access in the USA and a subsidiary of Hughes Aircraft ) for satellite-based Internet connections. Data rates of 512 kbit / s, 2 Mbit / s and 16 Mbit / s are possible with a relatively small 74 cm antenna. Like the first satellite, the satellite was originally to be launched with a Zenit 3SL rocket. After a false start of the Zenit-3SL, however, a contract with Arianespace was concluded in March 2007 instead . Spaceway-3 was launched into geostationary orbit by an Ariane 5 on August 14, 2007 along with BSAT-3a . Hughes has an option at Boeing to build an additional satellite (Spaceway-4) of this type.
