Spanish Bombs and the Spanish Civil War

Spanish Bombs praises the heroism of the moderate to revolutionary Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. This devastated Spain from July 17, 1936 to April 1, 1939, when the nationalists under Franco established their fascist dictatorship.

Many places and personalities associated with the Spanish Civil War are mentioned in the lyrics. Such was Andalusia one of the first Spanish regions that were occupied by the nationalists. Federico García Lorca , called Federico Lorca in the song, was an anarchist poet who was killed during the war. The Guardia Civil is a paramilitary unit under the shared command of the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Defense, which persecuted politically dissenters in Franco's time. The song line They sing the red flag, they wore the black one is a reference to the communist workers' struggle (red flag) and to the anarchists (black flag). The Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT) is an anarcho-syndical union that was instrumental in the initial success of the resistance against Franco. It also carries the previously mentioned black and red flag.
