history

The Sparkasse Siegen is an amalgamation of six previous savings banks from the city of Siegen and surrounding municipalities.

The oldest predecessor institution of Sparkasse Siegen, Stadtsparkasse Siegen, opened on October 17, 1842 in the town hall. As a municipal institute, it emerged from the midst of the citizens as a self-help institution. The starting point for the establishment of the Stadtsparkasse Siegen - like all other regional savings banks - were not commercial considerations, but the idea of social helpfulness. In particular, the poorer sections of the Siegen population should be given the opportunity to accumulate savings safely and with interest, even in small and very small amounts, as a backup for emergencies.

The development of the Stadtsparkasse Siegen also spurred efforts to set up savings institutes in the neighboring towns. Finally, in 1859 the "Sparkasse for the Ferndorf Office" was established as the predecessor of the Stadtsparkasse Kreuztal and in 1870 the Sparkassen Weidenau (including the former municipality of Netphen) and the Sparkasse Eiserfeld (including the municipality of Wilnsdorf).

On July 1, 1971, the Stadtsparkasse Siegen, Sparkasse Weidenau and Sparkasse Eiserfeld merged to form the new Sparkasse Siegen in the run-up to the municipal reorganization in the core area of Siegerland. On September 1, 2003, it merged with the Stadtsparkasse Kreuztal.

A contract was signed on September 30, 2014, whereby Sparkasse Siegen took over Stadtsparkasse Freudenberg on May 1, 2015 . The councils of the affected communities approved these plans beforehand. With the addition of the City of Freudenberg, five municipalities belong to the Sparkassenzweckverband . The five branches of the Freudenberger Sparkasse are to be protected for ten years.

On May 1, 2018, Stadtsparkasse Hilchenbach was taken over by Sparkasse Siegen, the contract was signed in November 2017 after the councils approved the merger. The technical merger of the two savings banks is scheduled for May 13, 2018. The special purpose association will thus comprise six municipalities.
