Steffen Mues
Steffen Mues [ muːs ] (born February 11, 1965 in Wuppertal ) is a German lawyer and politician ( CDU ). Since October 1, 2007 he has been the mayor of Siegen .
Life and work
After graduating from high school at Am Löhrtor in Siegen in 1984, Mues completed an apprenticeship as a banker at Deutsche Bank in Siegen. He then studied law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn . From 1993 to 1995 he was a trainee lawyer at the Siegen Regional Court . The lawyer completed specialist training as a specialist lawyer for labor law and specialist lawyer for tax law and was admitted to the Siegen District Court from 1996 to 2003.
Party and politics
Mues joined the CDU in 1981. In the 1999 local elections, he was elected as a CDU direct candidate for the City Council of Siegen, to which he was a member until he was elected councilor for the city of Siegen in 2003. On October 1, 2003, Mues became an alderman of the city of Siegen for school, culture, sport, youth and social affairs.
In the mayoral election on September 9, 2007, Mues was elected as CDU mayor candidate with around 59 percent of the votes in a second run-off ballot required for mayor of the city of Siegen as the successor to Ulf Stötzel, who retired for reasons of age .
Mues was elected for a term of office of seven years - beyond the current electoral term of the city council in 2009 - until the end of the next but one municipal electoral term of the city council in 2014 according to the mayor electoral regulations changed by the CDU / FDP in North Rhine-Westphalia.
In May 2014, Mues was re-elected in the first ballot with around 56 percent for a further term of office until 2020 in the mayor elections that were brought back into line with the electoral period of the municipal councils by the SPD / Greens majority in the NRW state parliament.
Mues pushed through a historical clarification of the city's history across inter-party differences. On the occasion of the annual commemoration of the bombing of Siegen in World War II , right-wing extremists demonstrated for the first time in 2008 . In the following year, the mayor's speech on this memorial day was no longer limited to this bombing, as usual, but named fascism as the cause, expressed his pride in the recent protests against it and also commemorated the victims of the attacks that began with victories . Previously, this issue led to the resignation of offices in Mues' own parliamentary group. Ultimately, all parliamentary groups supported the advance, including those who originally only wanted their own victims to be thought of. The right-wing extremist rally did not take place on this memorial day the next year. What remains is that the alternative city tours to places where National Socialist disregard for human rights was initiated decades ago are now taking place especially on this memorial day and with the express support of the mayor.
