history

On November 11, 1839, when the Oberpräsident in Münster issued the “Statute”, the Spar-Casse zu Unna was created . In the following year, on January 1st, 1840, the Spar-Casse zu Unna started business operations. The Spar-Casse zu Unna registered its first customer on January 8, 1840, the Fröndenberg master mason Fritz Heide. The first rendant (head) was Councilor Weymann, in whose private rooms the savings bank was housed at the time. At the end of the first business year there were already 76 savers, with a total savings of 5,828 Reichsthalers , 24 silver groschen and 11 pfennigs. In 1841, the textile merchant Eduard Josephson was elected to be the new agent of the Sparkasse, which he then ran in his house for a total of 30 years.

The “Sparkasse des Amts Unna-Camen” was founded on October 1st, 1865. This was preceded by a resolution by the community fathers of Obermassen on July 2, 1863 to suggest the establishment of a savings bank to the official assembly. In 1871 Wilhelm Kettling took over the management of the Unnaer Spar-Casse and continued the business in a courtyard extension of his house. His son Karl succeeded him in this office in 1892.

In 1894 the Städtische Sparkasse Unna moved to the “Old Town Hall” on the corner of Markt and Bahnhofstrasse. The space, however, left a lot to be desired in terms of usability and practicality. As early as 1898, the Sparkasse managed to purchase the Bahnhofstrasse 40 building. After it initially served as a post office, it finally housed the bankrupt Herbrecht bank. In 1932 they moved into the former office building of the Unnaer Bank and later Ruhr-Hellweg-Bank at Bahnhofstrasse 45.

In the years after the turn of the century, there were first attempts to “visit” customers in their residential area. In the course of these activities, collection points were set up in some municipalities of the Unna-Camen office - the nucleus of the later branches - among others in 1909 en masse. The first branch in Königsborn, at Fliederstraße 12 a, was opened by Sparkasse Unna in 1955. In 1961, the branches on Hertinger Straße, Friedrich-Ebert-Straße, Wasserstraße and Massener Straße, which had been completed by the end of 1964, followed . Another branch opened in 1974 in the new building area on Berliner Allee.

As part of the municipal reorganization, the Unna City Savings Bank, the Unna-Kamen District Savings Bank and the Unna District Savings Bank in Hamm required a merger in 1968/1969. This created the Sparkasse Unna. The new Sparkasse moved into its main office at Bahnhofstrasse 37. The necessary extension to the main office building was opened in 1980. The Sparkasse gave the northern end of the pedestrian zone its present-day appearance.

In 1996/1997 the Sparkasse Unna opened the new building of its largest branch in the Hauptstrasse in Holzwickede and concentrated its offer there, which until then had been spread over three smaller branches in the vicinity.
