history

Cash journal from the accounting of the Stadtsparkasse from 1844

Stadtsparkasse Werl was founded in 1844. On May 20, 1844, the President of the Province of Westphalia approved the statutes of the Städtische Sparkasse zu Werl . In a room in Werler's town hall, the counter was opened two days a week. In the following year 1845, the first full business year of the Stadtsparkasse, there were 226 payments with 18,180 thalers , 8 silver groschen and 7 pfennigs . They were offset by 4,541 thalers , 20 silver groschen and 10 pfennigs in repayments.

In 1850 the Sparkasse moved into the Döneke house on Kälbermarkt . In 1868 the bank paid the city for the first time surpluses, which were used to build the Werl Neheimer Kommunicationsweg , today's Bundesstraße 516. In 1894 the company founded a second savings bank, the Amtssparkasse . The business premises were in the Schlichting house on Kälbermarkt. Two years later, in 1896, the Bremen office joined the Amtssparkasse, which then bears the name Sparkasse der Ämter Werl - Bremen . In 1912, the Ämtersparkasse founded branches in Niederense and Wickede . The branch in Westönnen, which was opened in the same year, was probably not continued after the First World War .

Headquarters of the municipal savings bank on the market (1932)

In 1932 the savings bank law was put on a new basis. The savings banks became legally independent. A contract between the savings bank and the city of Werl was made due to the changed savings bank statutes. In 1937 the Stadtsparkasse and Ämtersparkasse merged to form Sparkasse Werl (Zweckverbandssparkasse der Stadt Werl and the offices of Werl and Bremen). In 1958 the new savings bank building at Engelhardstrasse 4 was completed and service started.

In 1979 the Sparkasse Foundation for the Promotion of Art and Science was established on the occasion of the 135th anniversary of the Sparkasse Werl. In 2000, the Sparkasse building at Engelhardstrasse 4 was officially inaugurated after two years of new construction and renovation. In 2008 the S1 of the Sparkasse Werl opened.
