Special Unit 2 - The Monster Hunters is an American television series that premiered on the US broadcaster UPN between 2001 and 2002 . It was developed by Evan Katz, who had also worked on the series JAG - On behalf of the honor and Seven Days - Das Tor at the time .

action

A secret police unit called Special Unit 2 , which operates in Chicago today, fights so-called links . Links, associated with the missing link of evolutionary theory, appear in the series as the typical fairy tale and myth monsters; Werewolves , gargoyles , the black man and also beings from Greek mythology.

At the center of the plot are the two police officers from Special Unit 2 Detective Nicholas O'Malley and Detective Kate Benson. O'Malley and Benson are each assigned to cases in which a link has committed a crime. The task of Special Unit 2 is to hunt down the criminal links and to keep the population in the dark before knowing the existence of the monsters.

The approach of the two detectives is usually extremely unorthodox, and large-caliber firearms are not infrequently used. The police officers often get support from Carl, a gnome who is usually only reluctant to help with insider information.

background

concept

The basic concept of the series is, besides the teasing of serious mystery series like the X-Files , above all the undemanding and sometimes biting humor . This is particularly noticeable in the sometimes minute-long dialogues with mostly friendly taunts and in the often creative links (e.g. a sphinx , a living statue that prefers to just stand around and can only speak in riddles).

The series Buffy - The Vampire Slayer is made fun of by discovering that there is a real link behind all the legendary characters - except for vampires, which Buffy is mainly about, who are fictitious.

attitude

The rumor that the ratings for Special Unit 2 - The Monster Hunters were not convincing, which is why the series was discontinued after 19 episodes in 2002, is false. In fact, there was a pen-and-paper game ( Bureau 13 ) in the USA in the 1980s , which exactly thematizes the starting point of the series. Since the creator of the game and the producers could not agree on further cooperation or financial compensation, the producers decided to discontinue Special Unit 2 - The Monster Hunters . There were hardly any fan protests against the discontinuation of the series, which is why neither party made any attempt to approach each other or at least to film a worthy conclusion.

Episodes

Special Unit 2 - Die Monsterjäger premiered in two seasons with six and 13 episodes.
