Carl Friedrich Ferdinand Graf von der Goltz (born April 12, 1815 in Stuttgart , † February 21, 1901 in Nice ) was a Prussian general of the cavalry .

Life

Goltz was the son of Lieutenant General and Envoy Count Karl Friedrich Heinrich von der Goltz (1775–1822) and Juliane "Julie" Wilhelmine Freiin von Seckendorff (1786–1857).

After attending the Knight Academy in Brandenburg an der Havel , Goltz joined the 1st Cuirassier Regiment of the Prussian Army in Breslau on August 21, 1832 . He became second lieutenant on September 14, 1833 and took part in the campaign in Algeria in 1844/45 in the entourage of the French Marshal Bugeaud . In 1848 Goltz became adjutant to the Prince of Prussia, who later became Kaiser Wilhelm , whom he accompanied on the campaign to Baden in 1849 .

Goltz became lieutenant colonel and commander of the 7th hussar regiment in Bonn in 1859 and in 1861 the king's wing adjutant . From 1864 Goltz commanded the 14th Cavalry Brigade , which he also led in 1866 during the war against Austria in the battles near Münchengrätz and Königgrätz . In the same position, Goltz took over the 19th Cavalry Brigade on October 31, 1866 . In 1868 he became commander of the Guards Cavalry Division and took part with this large formation during the war against France in 1870/71 in the battles at Gravelotte , Sedan and the enclosure of Paris , after he had been promoted to lieutenant general and adjutant general in July 1870 .

In October 1872 Goltz gave command of the Guard Cavalry Division and in 1873 became chief of the Reitenden Feldjägerkorps and in 1875 general of the cavalry. On the occasion of his 50th anniversary in service, Wilhelm I made him Knight of the Order of the Black Eagle on August 21, 1882 . Goltz had been a Knight of the Seraphine Order since December 12, 1882 . He was put up for disposition on April 10, 1888 , but remained on duty adjutant general of Kaiser Wilhelm I until the monarch's death.

After his death he was buried in the family's mausoleum in Charlottenburg on Luisenfriedhof II in Berlin-Westend . His grave is dedicated to the city of Berlin as an honorary grave .

Goltz married on July 14, 1860 in Lübbenau with Mathilde Maria Countess von Lynar (born September 27, 1835, † September 18, 1876 in Wiesbaden) from the house of Lübbenau. She was the lady in waiting for Princess Victoria . The following children were born from the marriage:

After the death of his first wife, Goltz married Adele Kutter in Wiesbaden on October 1, 1891, widowed Preyer (born August 23, 1820 in Verviers ; † April 29, 1898 in Baden-Baden ).
