The Spectator is a weekly British magazine for politics and culture based in London. It has been published since 1828 , making it the oldest English language magazine still in existence. The Spectator is known as the “reference sheet of conservative intellectuals” and is known for its high quality analysis and snappy tone.

The magazine is as much as the conservative daily The Daily Telegraph and the art magazine Apollo of Press Holdings by David and Frederick Barclay . The editor has been Fraser Nelson, who has worked for The Scotsman and The Times since 2009 . Among his predecessors were Iain Macleod , Nigel Lawson and Boris Johnson , all politicians from the Conservative Party .

In addition to the usual reports and essays on politics, business, art, music, and books, there are regular supplements on food and drink, travel, and luxury items. An Australian edition has also been published since 2008.

On the homepage of the Spectator u. a. operated the politics blog Coffee House and an online shop . The Spectator also organizes debates, conferences, readings, concerts and museum tours.

The political orientation of the Spectator today is generally rather conservative; in the 19th century the Spectator still supported the Whigs and their successors in the party structure, the Liberal Party . At the end of the 19th century, however, there was increasing support for the Liberal Unionists who later merged with the Conservative Party. The Spectator is critical of the EU and leans much more towards the Atlantic .
