Spectrum - International Prize for Photography

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spectrum - International Prize for Photography is the title of the award that recognizes the importance of photography as a contemporary medium of the visual arts. The prize, endowed with 15,000 euros, is awarded by the Lower Saxony Foundation in cooperation with the Sprengel Museum Hannover . In addition, a comprehensive exhibition in the Sprengel Museum and the publication of a multilingual catalog are used to present the artists featured to a broader public.

With the naming of the award, the award-lenders tie in with the history of one of the first photo galleries in Europe: The Spectrum photo gallery, founded in 1972, laid the foundation for the photography and media collection in the Sprengel Museum Hanover.

Since 1994, internationally renowned photographers have been honored with the award, usually every two to three years. The artists represent a comprehensive range of the medium of photography, be it the documentary style of Robert Adams and Helen Levitt , "the interplay of image and text" by Sophie Calle , the conceptual approach of Martha Rosler or, for example, "playing with images" by John Baldessari .
