Bahman Jalali

Bahman Jalali , also Dschalali (* 1944 in Tehran , Iran ; † January 15, 2010 ibid) was an Iranian photographer and university lecturer for photography .

Life

Jalali studied politics and economics in his hometown in the 1960s and graduated from what was then Melli University , the National University (now Shahid Beheschti University ) with a degree in economics. He taught himself photography and started working as a photographer for Tamasha magazine in 1972 . In 1974 he went to the UK to work for two years . During this time he became a member of the Royal Photographic Society and attended the John Vickers School of Photography in London .

At the age of 31, Jalali became the head of the photography department of Saroush Press , the national Iranian radio and television company, in Tehran and worked there until 1991. In the following years, during which he taught photography at various institutions in Iran, numerous photo series were created in which he recorded the everyday life of his homeland. Well-known series are fishermen from 1974 to 1989, architectural photographs z. B. on the port city of Buschir (1974–1976) or on desert architecture from 1977 to 1991. His series on the Islamic Revolution of 1978 and 1979 and on the First Gulf War from 1980 to 1988 received great attention, also internationally . Between 2003 and 2006 he created his series Image of Imaginations in which he combined depictions of flowers with old photographs and calligraphy.

Jalali was one of the initiators of Iran's first photography museum in Tehran, the Akskhaneh Shahr . There he worked, among other things, as a consultant and curator of exhibitions. He was also a member of the editorial team of the photo magazine Aksnameh .

In 2009/2010 Jalali was treated in Germany for his pancreatic cancer . He returned to Tehran and died there on January 15, 2010.
