Crane and surroundings

After the First World War , an inland port was built parallel to the expansion of the water connection to the Elbe to promote trade on the east bank of the Ziegelinnensee. In 1947 the quay wall was extended to 294 meters. In 1972 the turnover was 200,000 tons. After the reunification , the port lost its economic importance.

The six-storey building from 1939 in the style of the 1920s / 30s with the high pitched roof and clinker facade was built as a Reich type silo for grain by the merchant company Löwenthal und Nord am Ziegelinnensee at the old port. The concrete silo had a bulk volume of 6000 tons. The Jewish limited partners , the Löwenthal family and widow Vera Nord, were expropriated. The co-limited partner Oehlerich was able to appropriate the company during the Nazi era and continued to run it as Oehlerich und Sohn . After the Second World War , the warehouse was publicly owned by the GDR. It was used as a storage facility until the early 1990s.

Transferred back to the heirs, the warehouse was sold in 1995. A thorough renovation and conversion to a hotel took place until 1998 according to plans by a Hamburg architects' association. Due to the demolition of the inner silo cells, an additional steel structure had to be installed as a house in the house . The 1.50 meter high foundation also required considerable renovation work due to subsidence and water problems. Old and new elements were used in the interior work. The hotel with 77 rooms has a restaurant, bar, conference rooms, sauna and fitness room. It has been owned by Vera Hirte, daughter of the first buyer, since 2006.

The area around the warehouse with a promenade and a landing stage was decisively improved in the following 20 years through residential buildings. A crane symbolizes the former port area.
