The Spelaeoconcha paganettii is a species of snail from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). It is the only species (with three subspecies) of the genus Spelaeoconcha , which in turn is the only genus of the family Spelaeoconchidae . The species with its three subspecies is cave-dwelling.

features

The housings are right-hand wound and spindle-shaped and highly conical. They have six to seven turns and measure 3.4 to 6.5 mm in height and 1.5 to 2.6 mm in diameter (thickness). The shell is strong, translucent (when fresh) and with a shiny, barely sculpted surface. The mouth is not reinforced, the edges, except on the back, are somewhat thickened. The umbilicus is very narrow, but almost open and only partially covered by the spindle edge of the mouth opening. In the hermaphroditic genitalia, the penis is relatively short and the epiphallus is very short. The flagellum, however, is well developed and has a rounded tip. The spermatic duct penetrates the epiphallus. The stem of the spermathec is relatively thick and short, with no diverticula. The reservoir itself is spindle-shaped and relatively large.

Occurrence, way of life and distribution

The species is a cave dweller. So far, specimens have only been found in the rubble of caves in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina .

Systematics

The position of the family Spelaeoconchidae or the genus Spelaeoconcha is controversial. In Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) the family Spelaeoconchidae is placed in the superfamily Pupilloidea , Schileyko (1998) treats it as a subfamily within the Enidae . In the fauna Europaea the genus is in the family Vertiginidae , subfamily Nesopupinae . The number of species is also uncertain; usually only one species with three subspecies is accepted.
