List of municipalities in Vorarlberg
This list of municipalities in Vorarlberg includes all 96 political municipalities in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg .
Basics
The federal state of Vorarlberg consists of four administrative districts , which contain a total of 96 independent municipalities. The municipalities and their names are legally stipulated in the appendix to Paragraph 1 of the Vorarlberg State Law on the Organization of Municipal Administration.
397,139 residents have their primary residence throughout the country. There are also around 28,000 people with second homes in Vorarlberg. In relation to the area of the federal state with 2,601.12 square kilometers , this results in a population density of around 153 inh . Per km².
Vorarlberg is - apart from the federal capital Vienna , which is also a separate federal state - the Austrian state with the fewest independent political communities. Five of the 96 municipalities in Vorarlberg have city rights; four of these are also district capitals of the four Vorarlberg administrative districts. Bregenz is both the provincial capital of Vorarlberg and the district capital of the Bregenz district . There are also twelve market communities in the state, including Lustenau , Austria's most populous market community.
The largest municipality in Vorarlberg measured by its population is the district capital Dornbirn with currently 49,872 inhabitants. In terms of population, the counterpart of Dornbirn is the smallest municipality in the state, the municipality of Dünserberg , with 143 inhabitants. The largest municipality in terms of area is Gaschurn in the rear of the Montafon with a municipality area of 175.28 km². The municipality with the smallest area is Röns with a municipality area of only 1.45 km².
Regions
In Vorarlberg, specific names are generally used for the different regions. These are based in particular on the geographical and topographical aspects of the state administration and thus clarify the regional connections in Vorarlberg. The following names of the most important regions of Vorarlberg find their way into this list; the municipalities are assigned accordingly:
- the (Vorarlberg) Rhine Valley ,
- the Laternsertal (a side valley of the Rhine Valley),
- the Leiblachtal (on Lake Constance),
- the Bregenz Forest ,
- the Walgau (with Brandnertal ),
- the Great Walsertal ,
- the Klostertal ,
- the Montafon (the latter three side valleys of the Walgau),
- the Kleine Walsertal and
- the (eponymous) Arlberg .
In addition to belonging to the Bregenzerwald, the smaller Hochtannberg region is also often described for the Vorarlberg communities Schröcken and Warth .
It should be noted that the Arlberg region is also located in the neighboring state of Tyrol (around St. Anton ), the Alpine Rhine Valley is a cross-border region with Switzerland and Liechtenstein , Lake Constance with Switzerland and Germany, and the valleys of the Bregenzerwald are interlinked with the Allgäu .
Municipal law of Vorarlberg
The commune names given are the official names of the communes used by the communes, as determined by state law.
There are three different municipal statuses in Vorarlberg: normal municipalities (79), market municipalities (12) and urban municipalities (5). Vorarlberg is the only Austrian federal state in which there is no city with its own statute , i.e. a city that is also an administrative district.

List of the former municipalities of Vorarlberg
The following list contains all politically independent municipalities that existed in Vorarlberg - as part of the County of Tyrol , since 1896 as a separate crown land , since 1918 as a federal state - and have meanwhile been incorporated into other municipalities.
In 1850 there were 104 politically independent territorial communities in Vorarlberg and with Nofels , which was a local community of the community of Tosters , and the "Judengemeinde" Hohenems , which was a political personal community within the territorial community of Hohenems, two special communities.
At the turn of the century in 1900 there were 103 communities, the two special communities had already been dissolved.
