The Hochtannbergpass is a mountain pass in Vorarlberg that separates the Allgäu Alps from the Lechquellen Mountains. It connects the Lech valley near Warth with the valley of the Bregenz Ach near Schoppernau and is part of the European main watershed . The deepest point of the watershed has a height of 1660  m . The Bregenzerwaldstraße L 200, which reaches a height of 1676  m , runs over the Hochtannbergpass . There is a short-term safety lock in winter if the weather or snow conditions allow. In the flat pass landscape lies the Kalbelesee and a little to the southwest of it the Körbersee .

Avalanche barriers

After a landslide from the Saloberkopf at the beginning of 2002, the route above the pass road on the Schröcken - Warth side has now been secured with avalanche barriers. The Bregenzerwaldstraße was renovated and expanded in this area in 2007.

history

Over the Hochtannbergpass, which is often referred to as the Hochkrumbachsattel, already led in the 15th and 16th. Century a mule track, which was even referred to as a "country road" in documents of the time. For a long time, the mule path , which was at best prepared , received little attention and was only modernized very late. It was mainly committed by Walsers who wanted to go through it to the Lech Valley or the Little Walser Valley . In order to reach the latter, however, the Gemstelpass ( 1971  m ) had to be crossed, a mountain path still leads over it today. As early as the late Middle Ages , a chapel and an inn were built near the pass, the core of today's Hochkrumbach settlement .

The pass, which is only 1676  m high, has only been accessible with a road since 1954, before the passable road ended in Schröcken. The road was built for 25 years with a few interruptions. Parallel to and south of today's pass road leads from the apex eastwards (into the Lech Valley) the "Alte Salzstrasse" to Warth, a mule track that can now be used as a hiking trail. To the north of the pass road, another hiking trail leads over Warth towards Gehren.

The old west ramp in the Schröcken - Neßlegg section , with its formerly extremely narrow bends and the steep gradients immediately following it, was later replaced by a three-kilometer, completely new route and made winter-proof. Eight bridges with a total length of 715 meters and two tunnels several hundred meters in length were built in this area.
