The (mass) specific volume ( symbol ) is defined as the reciprocal of the density : ${\displaystyle v}$ ${\displaystyle \rho }$

The specific volume is the ratio of volume to mass , i.e. the volume of the unit of mass . ${\displaystyle V}$ ${\displaystyle m}$

In meteorology , the symbol α denotes the specific volume of air.
