The chestnut brown weevil ( Sphaeriestes castaneus , syn .: Salpingus castaneus ) is a beetle from the family of the weevil (Salpingidae).

features

The beetles are 3.0 to 3.3 millimeters long. Their bodies are elongated and flattened and have a brown or reddish brown color. Several basal antennae , the splints ( tibia ) and tarsi are lighter colored. The flattened head is slightly stretched and structured roughly punctiform. The last five antennae are larger than the rest. The pronotum has coarse, elongated points. The upper wings (elytres) are irregularly structured at the front and punctiform at the back in the indicated rows. Epipleurs are formed up to the ends of the wings.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is widespread in Europe and occurs in the north to the south of Finland, central Norway and Sweden. The species is local in the British Isles. The adults occur from April to May and live under bark in coniferous forests. The species is quite common everywhere. Both the adults and the larvae feed on bark beetles .
