Sphaerophorus globosus , also known as ball-bearer lichen , is a soil or bark-dwelling lichen from the Sphaerophoraceae family.
description
The ball-bearer lichen belongs to the group of shrub lichen, because its approx. 5 to 10 cm high, very brittle bed ( thallus ) is loosely branched. The main trunks have cartilaginous, gray-brownish branches (0.2 to 0.3 mm thick) with whitish tips. The spherical fruit bodies ( apothecia ) are at the branch ends and contain single-celled spores .
distribution
The globular lichen is particularly common in the high elevations of western and northern Europe with high levels of precipitation, but it also occurs in North America. It colonizes acidic substrates such as heather soils, moss-covered silicate rocks , but also trunks of old deciduous and coniferous trees.
