The Sphinx Valley is a shallow and 1.5 km long valley in East Antarctic Victoria Land . In the Royal Society Range , it runs northwest and parallel to the Columnar Valley and ends immediately west of the summit of Table Mountain .
Alan Sherwood, director of the New Zealand Geological Survey's 1987-1988 campaign , gave him his name. It is named after a rock formation on the north-western wall of the valley, which is reminiscent of an Egyptian sphinx .
