Sphinx formosana is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of moth (Sphingidae).
features
The species looks similar to the closely related species Sphinx crassistriga , but has much narrower wings. The apex of the forewings is curved sickle-shaped, in the hind wings it is pointed. The forewings are covered with pale gray scales on the upper side. In the male genitals, the valves are stronger, the paramers have a toothed outer edge on the dorsal half and a more protruding ventral edge. The saccus is longer than that of Sphinx crassistriga .
Occurrence and way of life
Sphinx formosana is in the north of the Central Mountains of Taiwan endemic . It occurs in Nantou , Taichung, and Ilan counties . The species occurs above 2000 meters above sea level. It belongs to the East Palearctic relic fauna of the Taiwanese mountain regions.
The moths were detected in June (Nantou and Taichung) and July (Ilan). All pre-imaginal stages, any parasitoids and the other way of life are unknown.
