Toys Carl Loebner Torgau is the oldest toy shop in the world. The first written mention of the shop in the history of the town of Torgau goes back to 1685. The company has always been passed down from father to son and is currently run by the twelfth generation.

history

The master turner Christoph Loebner opened his master woodturning workshop in Torgau at the end of 1685 after his wedding in Leipzig and made wooden toys . Company names were officially recorded for the first time at the time of his grandson Carl Loebner, which is how the company got its name, which is still used today. In 1780, the guild master Johann-George Loebner acquired the house in Bäckerstraße on the market square of Torgau, which is still used today as a shop, and continued to manufacture his wooden toys there, which he first sold in the markets in the area and at the Leipzig trade fair . His initial range of goods were wooden dolls, drumsticks, tops, skittles, pipes and billiard balls. From the sixth generation onwards, the Loebners were pure merchants and only dealt with turned and other toys. Own production was given up.

The coat of arms of the Carl Loebner company in the form of the Seiffener Reiterlein ( original Erzgebirge ) on the market in Torgau still indicates the historical roots of the family company, which in the early days of the company exclusively manufactured and sold wooden toys.

In 2006, the then owner Johann-Georg Loebner (eleventh generation) handed over an extensive collection of toys from the Loebner family to the City and Cultural History Museum of Torgau as a permanent loan. Among the rarities is the smallest wooden jointed doll in the world.

In 2010 the family company Spielwaren Carl Loebner celebrated its 325th anniversary. Today it has around 21,000 items from 220 brand manufacturers in its range. The sales offer ranges from the wooden train to the Star Trek spaceship.

Ingo Loebner has been running the company in the twelfth generation since April 2018.
