Toys - That Was Our Childhood is a documentary series produced by the US streaming service Netflix since 2017 . The series deals with the genesis, success and failure of various toys and their manufacturers.
Content and production
The documentary series deals with the history of various toy series since the 1950s, including from manufacturers Mattel ( He-Man , Barbie ), Hasbro ( GI Joe , Transformers ) and Lego . Through interviews with participating employees of the toy manufacturers and sociologists, an insight into the development process, the marketing and the cultural influence of the toys is shown. People who played with the toy at the time also have their say, and the program shows fans who still collect the toys today.
Originally, Netflix had planned a total of eight episodes. After the broadcast of the second season in 2018, it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2018 that a further season would be produced, which would cover the toys of Power Rangers , My Little Pony and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles . This was published on November 15, 2019 on Netflix. Shortly thereafter, Brian Volk-Weiss, the series' developer, announced that he had already planned to cover the brands Matchbox , Cabbage Patch Kids , The Smurfs and NERF in a potential fourth season . So far, however, it has not yet been determined that Netflix will extend the production for this additional season.
The spin-off series Films - These were our cinema years , which deals with the making of film classics, was also released in November 2019 .
