history

In 1891 the British extended the Indian rail network to Chaman. Around 1910 there were plans to continue this line to Kandahar and other Afghan cities, but these were not implemented. The "Gate of Friendship" has been located at the border crossing since 2003.

There have been repeated attacks in the city in recent years. In February 2008, 38 Afghans were killed in a suicide bombing and an unknown number of other people, including five Canadians, were injured. In January 2011, at least 17 people died in a suicide attack on a bathhouse in Spin Boldak. 21 were injured. On February 24, 2011, a suicide bomber blew himself up with a car bomb in the city center after a chase with secret service personnel, injuring 16 civilians, six secret service agents and two border police officers. On July 16, 2012, five civilians died when their vehicle was hit by an explosive device hidden in the street. On January 6, 2013, two suicide bombers attacked a meeting of tribal leaders. They killed four people and injured 15 others.
