Spine Island (English for spinal island ) is a narrow island in the archipelago of the Southern Orkney Islands , consisting of individual rock segments . It lies between the western end of Coronation Island and Monroe Island at the head of Sandefjord Bay .
The American sealer captain Nathaniel Palmer and his British counterpart George Powell discovered the island in December 1821 while exploring the South Orkney Islands together. The descriptive name was given by scientists from the British Discovery Investigations , who carried out surveys here in 1933.
