Spiral Knights is an MMORPG developed by Three Rings Design and published by Sega . The official release was on April 4, 2011. Since June 14, 2011, the game has also been available as a free-to-play title on the Steam online platform .

The game now has over a million registered accounts.

Gameplay

Spiral Knights is an action-adventure in third-person perspective with real-time battles . The player creates his own avatar (the so-called Spiral Knight ), whose task it is to explore the planet Cradle after the crash of his spaceship. This planet is driven by the so-called clockwork , a huge machine inside the planet. Within this machine there are different levels that the player can travel alone or in groups with up to four other people to mine minerals . In doing so, he has to constantly face various opponents, which differ from one another from level to level and become stronger with increasing depth. Up to the core of the planet there is a total of 28 levels, which are divided into 3 ranks. Entering each rank requires specially designed equipment, which must first be acquired by the player.

On the surface of the planet, the player can stock up on new equipment, energy and recipes. The better equipment is needed to penetrate the deeper levels of the clockwork. You can buy them with so-called crowns, the currency in the game, or make them yourself using recipes. To travel the clockwork and manufacture equipment, energy is always required. This regenerates itself to a certain extent; additional amounts can be bought in the in-game shop for crowns or real money.

Since July 30, 2013 there are flying companions, called sprites, for the player . There are three types of sprites that appear as fighters, supporters, or a mixture of both. Each sprite has three abilities that can be unlocked as the game progresses.

equipment

In contrast to most popular MMO's, the character itself cannot become stronger. Its properties are composed of the equipment collected or manufactured. The player can upgrade his Knight with various pieces of equipment, including helmets , armor , firearms , swords and shields . These are divided into 6 different quality classes, which are represented by stars in the item description. An item can have between 0 and 5 stars, the more stars, the stronger and more valuable the corresponding piece of equipment. In addition, the player receives "heat" from killed opponents, with which he can improve his objects by up to 10 heat levels. With each level, the corresponding item receives a minimal improvement in its properties.

Items are obtained by the player in two main ways: by trading with players or NPCs or by crafting. The latter requires recipes that have to be purchased from NPC vendors beforehand. Furthermore, various materials must be collected that are dropped by opponents. Since higher-level pieces of equipment usually require the corresponding item of the previous quality class to be produced, branched alchemy paths arise . In very rare cases, opponents killed by the player can also drop pieces of equipment.

With the update of October 4, 2011, additional accessories were added with which equipped items can be upgraded. This upgrade takes place on a purely visual level and has no effect on the status values.

energy

In addition to the crowns, energy is another currency in the game. Almost all objects are powered by energy, including the transport elevators between the clockwork levels and the crafting machines. There are two different forms of energy:

Fog energy

Energy in a gaseous state is referred to as fog energy. This flows permanently from the core of the planet and also occurs in the atmosphere. Each Knight has a special module that can absorb and absorb fog energy from the air. Their amount is limited to a maximum of 100 energy points, which can be fully recharged within 22 hours. Fog energy is not tradable and cannot be obtained except through automatic charging and fog tanks.

Crystal energy

The energy in solid form is called crystal energy. In contrast to fog energy, it does not regenerate and must be bought by the player for game currency or real money. Their number is not limited, and the player can also use them to trade with other players.

The player almost always needs energy, otherwise no actions can be carried out in the game other than trading in objects. Regardless of their physical state , both forms of energy can be used for the same purpose.

criticism
