Spitignev from Brno

Spitignev (Czech Spytihněv Brněnský , also Spitignew ; † 1199 ), Duke of Brno in Moravia , came from the Přemyslid family .

Life

Spitignev was the son of Vratislav . He ruled at Brno from 1189 to 1191 and from 1194 to 1197. He supported Heinrich of Prague on many military campaigns by leading his army.

After the death of the bishop-duke Heinrich Bretislav III. (1197) Spitignev was next to Vladislav Heinrich and Přemysl Ottokar I one of the three heir apparent. He was defeated in the battle for the Bohemian throne, was blinded and died shortly afterwards from the effects of the blindness.
