Spitterfall
At 19 meters, the Spitterfall is the highest natural waterfall in Thuringia ( Germany ).
The Spitter , a low mountain stream in the north-west of the Middle Thuringian Forest, overcomes the Härtling ridge made of Hühnberg rock, a dolerite of the Unterrotlying (Autun) , with the Spitterfall below the Rennsteig high- altitude hiking trail in four sliding cascade steps . The Spitterfall created a notch that reaches down to the bottom of a valley basin on the north side of the Thuringian Forest , which was shaped over the Ice Age . The source area of the Spitter is only 1.5 kilometers away on the Ebertswiese , a nature reserve at an altitude of around 750 to 800 meters on the border between the districts of Schmalkalden-Meiningen and Gotha . The Spitterfall itself is in the district of Gotha. It is protected as a geological natural monument and has been part of the "Spittergrund" nature reserve since November 23, 2001 .
The Spitter stream is the only flowing body of water to cross the Rennsteig in the area of the Ebertswiese nature reserve .
