The pointy-winged grass owl ( Mythimna straminea ), sometimes also known as reed white-veined owl or reddish-yellow reed-grass owl, is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

description

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 30 to 35 millimeters. The color of the upper side of the forewing varies from light red-brown to yellow-red to ocher. The apex is pointed. The outer transverse line is only indicated by a few black dots. The veins are bordered whitish and dark. The kidney flaw is reduced to a small black point, peg and ring flaws are missing. There is a series of very small black dots along the hemline. A dark row of dots stands out from the whitish to light gray upper side of the hind wings, which also clearly shines through on the underside of the hind wings and which distinguishes the species from other Mythimna and Leucania species.

egg

The spherical egg has a strongly flattened base. It has a reddish yellow color and the surface is clearly moistened.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars have a dirty yellow basic color. They show a thin, white back line, numerous slightly wavy light and dark longitudinal lines and a light side stripe. The white stigmas are outlined in black.

Doll

There are four thorns on the cremaster of the brown pupa , which are longer in the males than in the females.

distribution and habitat

The pointy-winged grass owl is distributed locally in southern and central Europe. The southeastern extension extends through parts of Asia to Mongolia . It is also found in Morocco and Lebanon . The species prefers to colonize the banks of rivers, lakes and moors.

Way of life

The moths fly in one generation in the northern range, and in a second, less numerous generation in the south, which can be found between June and August or September and October. They are nocturnal, fly to artificial light sources , visit bait and have also been observed sucking on beaked sedge ( Carex rostrata ). The food plants of the caterpillars, which appear from August onwards, are the leaves of reed ( Phragmites australis ) and slender sedge ( Carex acuta ). The half-grown caterpillars prefer to overwinter in reed stubble, where they pupate in May.

Danger

The pointed-winged grass owl occurs locally in all German federal states, but is in decline in some areas due to the destruction of reeds and drainage and is therefore included in the red list of endangered species on the "warning list".
