The pointed head saw-ray ( Anoxypristis cuspidata ) is a species from the family of saw-rays and the only member of the genus Anoxypristis . The fish live in the Red Sea , the Persian Gulf , off New Guinea , off the south coast of Japan and the north coast of Australia .
features
The body of the pointed-head saw ray is shark-like with wing-like pectoral fins, the upper side is gray with pale white fins, the underside is also pale white. The head is flat with a sword-shaped, even snout with 18 to 22 pairs of laterally protruding, triangular teeth. The largest known specimen had a total length of 4.70 m, an unconfirmed catch of 6.10 m.
Way of life
The fish live near the coast in shallow water between 0 and 40 m, preferably in river deltas , occasionally they also swim up river courses. They feed on smaller fish and cuttlefish . The pointed-head saw-ray is, like all saw-rays, ovoviviparous .
