Spivey Records

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spivey Records was an American Blues - label , which in 1961 by the blues singer Victoria Spivey and jazz historian Len Kunštát was founded. Between 1961 and 1985 numerous jazz and blues albums appeared on the label. Most of the recordings were made by artists with whom the owners were friends. After Kunstadt's death, the label stopped work, but Kunstadt's niece plans to re-publish the Spivey Records catalog on CD. To date, however, no CDs have been released.

Bob Dylan and Spivey Records

Bob Dylan was discovered by Victoria Spivey in Greenwich Village and recorded 4 albums as a harmonica player and background singer for Spivey Records. In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Dylan said that one of the best recordings he has ever been on was with Big Joe Williams and Victoria Spivey. (Three Kings And The Queen). It is not Bob Dylan's first recordings, however, as his first album for CBS had already been made by this time.
