Spondylosis deformans , German spondylosis (also called spinal column wear), is a collective term for degenerative changes in vertebral bodies (and intervertebral spaces), which can be seen radiologically as irregularities (e.g. jagged edges, elevations or bulges) . Specific information about the condition of the intervertebral discs or clinical symptoms are not associated with these signs of wear on the vertebral bodies.
The cause is assumed to be degenerative changes in the intervertebral discs ( chondrosis ). The main symptom of the spondylosis deformans are the spondylophytes (jagged margins on the vertebral bodies). They can increase in size in the course of the disease and ultimately connect one or more vertebral segments with bones ( ankylosis ).
Wear-related spondylotic changes already had dinosaurs in the Mesozoic , as can be seen from their 20 to 30 meter long spine.
