Heinrich Buess

Heinrich Buess (born May 17, 1911 in St. Chrischona ; † December 31, 1984 in Basel ) was a Swiss gynecologist , company doctor and medical historian .

Life

After graduating from the Humanist Gymnasium in Basel , Buess studied medicine at the Universities of Basel and Tübingen . In 1937 he received his doctorate in Basel. This was followed by specialist training as a gynecologist until 1942. During the Second World War, he did 600 days of active service. He completed a second degree in medical history, during which he was one of the first scholarship holders of the National Fund . In 1946 he received his habilitation at the University of Basel.

Buess was first a factory doctor from 1946 to 1971, then a senior company doctor at Ciba . In 1950 he discovered chromium enteropathy in chemical workers and in 1964 pyrazole anemia . In 1949 he was a visiting professor at the Free University of Berlin . In 1951/1952 he made a study visit to the United States . From 1956 he was associate professor for the history of medicine at the University of Basel.

In his writings he deals with the history of the Swiss health system , pathology , gynecology and medicine from the 16th to 17th centuries.

Heinrich Buess was married to Margaretha Kuny, von Muttenz, from 1942.
