The Spongiophytaceae are a form taxon of fossils from the Devonian . It includes various enigmatic early organisms, some of which may represent or be related to vascular plants . Some of the organisms have some of the characteristics of vascular plants, but not all. Hence, they are sometimes viewed as transitional stages in the evolution of true vascular plants.
Representatives of the Spongiophytaceae include:
- Spongiophyton
- Orestovia
- Aculeophyton from the Lower Devonian Siberia is similar to Orestovia , but has massive, conical papillae on the axial surface.
