The sports arena was a weekly sports program on GDR television . It was broadcast on the second German television network from 1969 to 1974 and showed selected sporting events within the GDR or in socialist countries as well as a brief overview of the news .
After the program had been discontinued in the meantime, it was taken back into the program in 1979 under the title “Arena” with a different focus on the content. The program was last broadcast at the end of 1982.
history
The importance of sport in the GDR was met at the end of the 1960s with a wider variety of sports programs. With the help of GDR television, the population was to be motivated to do sports. Therefore, from October 1969, in addition to the current sports reporting within the program “ Sport aktuell ” in the 1st program, a separate sports information axis was set up in the newly introduced 2nd program.
The result was the two programs “Sportinformation” on Saturday (10:15 pm) and “Sport-Arena” on Sunday (9:00 pm). These programs mostly dealt with sporting events that could not or only very briefly be included in the coverage of “Sport aktuell”. In the "Sport Arena", for example, major league games in handball as well as detailed reports from the intervision cup in artistic gymnastics or the final matches of an international boxing tournament were broadcast.
The format remained unchanged until December 1974. In the period between 1975 and 1978 the program was replaced by the "Sport am Abend" format with similar content. From September 1979 the program was resumed under the abbreviated title "Arena". The time slot was moved to 7 p.m. on Sunday and several sporting events were recorded more frequently in one program. In addition, there were various categories such as the sports regulars' table or the motorsport review and the 10-minute news overview at the end of each issue.
In the planning documents for 1982, the standard broadcast is described as follows:
“'Arena' wants to convey the experience of sport in detailed reports. It also focuses on a detailed, event-related overview of the sports events on the weekend (Friday to Sunday). Short documentaries (treasure trove, motorsport revue, sportsman portraits) prove to be a viable stylistic device for this program from time to time. "
At the end of December 1982, “Arena” was replaced by the sports program “Sport am Sonntag”. It is possible that with the switch to less extensive articles in the format of a weekend overview, a change of name seemed appropriate.
