The sport fisherman - in contrast to the professional fisherman - practices fishing as a leisure activity. However, sport fishing - similar to private hunting - has come under discussion in Germany in recent years as a result of a changed awareness of the environment and animal welfare. According to the Animal Welfare Act , the catching and killing of vertebrates , including fish , is only permitted for “reasonable reasons”. The use of the caught fish for animal or human consumption is considered a “reasonable reason”. In common usage, the terms have anglers or anglers enforced because the name of angling as a sport does not meet the aforementioned conditions.

Associations

Various umbrella organizations for anglers have been set up to represent their interests .

Germany

In Germany, anglers are organized through local angling clubs in the Deutscher Angelfischerverband eV (DAFV). According to estimates from 2003, the number of anglers in Germany is estimated at 1.6 million.

Austria

Anglers in Austria are represented by regional associations in the Austrian Fisheries Association. Furthermore, there is also the Austrian Board of Trustees for Fisheries & Water Protection, which conducts general lobbying work for its members and member associations from the fishing environment.

Switzerland

The Swiss Fisheries Association organizes anglers in Switzerland. There are both professional and recreational anglers in the association. According to their own information, there are over 30,000 (sometimes over 350 member associations) organized.
