history

founding

The library was founded in 1943 by Colonel Raduner, head of the Federal Central Office for Pre-Education , Gymnastics, Sports and Shooting (EZV) . In the first 25 years of the Federal Gymnastics School, converted hotel rooms in the Grand Hotel served as library rooms. According to the library regulations of 1947, the holdings included sports books as well as books on general areas of knowledge, beautiful literature and even entertainment literature. The holdings were expanded through donations.

Opening the library to the general public

From the beginning of the 1950s the library was opened to a wider public. In 1959, the then director Karl Ringli created the “open door” library, a forerunner of today's open access library. The original book depository developed into a national and international center for sports bibliography and documentation.

Acute space problems

The increase in the number of buildings created ever greater space problems and affected the statics problems of the Grand Hotel. After an earthquake-like jolt shook the house, the books had to be distributed on different floors, which led to a very awkward access to the literature. The new construction of the school building solved the space problems, the library and film rental were housed on the top floor. As an open access library, the books were now available to the general public, and a reading corner was also set up. In 1983, due to renewed space problems, the reading corner was reduced and microfilming of the extensive specialist journals began. In addition, the film distribution was given in order to ensure the professional maintenance of the films.

From the library to the media center

Due to the increasing importance of audio-visual media, it was renamed to library-media library in 1977 and the areas of responsibility were expanded to include the collection, indexing and utilization of all information carriers. From 1980 onwards, through the connection to the then ABIM headquarters (General Federal Information System under MUMPS), the entire stock of books was recorded in a mainframe computer in Bern, so that the previous card catalog no longer had to be continued since 1990. Queries and research could be carried out using the OPAC utility from Swissbase. In addition, two CD-ROMs on which databases were stored (Spolit and Sportdiscus) modernized and simplified the supply of literature for the conditions at the time.

modification

In the course of a short renovation phase, the media library was given new equipment. In 2005 a revised layout system and a guidance system were introduced. The range of services was expanded to include work and research areas and a reading corner.

Joining the IDS association

On December 1, 2003, the media library joined the IDS Basel Bern library network .
