Spotted dick is a steamed or baked pudding made from beef kidney fat and dried fruit (mostly currants ) widely used in Great Britain and is usually served with custard . The part of the name Spotted (German “flecked” or “dotted”) refers to the dried fruit. Dick could from the word pudding (about pronunciation variants as puddink and Puddick ) have emerged or from the English words dough ( dough ) or dog ( dog derived). The same dish with plums instead of currants is also called a spotted dog . Another attempt to explain the name derives from the German word dick .

According to the Oxford English Dictionary , the earliest evidence of the dish is a recipe for "Plum Bolster or Spotted Dick" in The Modern Housewife, or, Ménagère by Alexis Soyer , published in 1850 .

NHS Trust hospital administrators in Gloucestershire (2001) and Flintshire County Council catering officers (2009) renamed the pudding Spotted Richard because the word dick , which is a vulgar term for the penis , was viewed as offensive . In Gloucestershire, the original name was changed back in 2002. The Flintshire County Council reversed the name after a few weeks. The traditional pudding is a common feature of British hospital menus.

Trivia

The ambiguity of the dessert name was themed in the movie King Ralph . However, this could hardly be translated into German: Ralph is presented with a selection of typically English dishes. As an American, he doesn't know the English dessert cake “Spotted Dick”, confuses it with the sausages from “Bangers and Mash” and asks which animal this “Dick” ( penis ) is from. In the German dubbing one made do with the designation "Gefüllter Dödel".
